Work. Stress. Chores. Sleep. More work and more Stress. We’ve fallen into the traditional American life and consumption pattern. We’ve expended so much energy and time working to generate large salaries, only to spend an inordinate amount on that next car, fancy meal, or other coveted item. And that is mainly to soothe our battered souls for all the time we devoted to working and worrying about work. We don’t get nearly enough time together or with family and friends, which is truly the most important part of our lives. At ages 50-ish and 40-ish, we aren’t getting any younger. The distant promise of a different lifestyle at age 65 (or even later) is not enough. We must get there sooner. Therefore, we’re changing habits, being more mindful of what we’re spending and saving, and trying to rearrange our busy calendar to focus on the most important things. While financial independence won’t solve all of our problems, we’re doing what we can to make that piggy bank as fat as possible. Grow, piggy, grow!
There's more to life than 50+ hour work weeks
I’ve seemingly been an engineer from birth, and along with this comes an intense interest in how things work. Outside my career as an engineer, I’ve treated as a hobby the study of personal finance, retirement planning, and investing. I’m putting that to good use to scheme for our early retirement. Beyond the brainier aspects of career and financial hobbies, I’m also a lover of the outdoors and of high places. I’ve spent a fair amount of time over the years climbing, hiking, and skiing the hills and mountains of several parts of the US. And I like chocolate. Oh, how I like chocolate.
In addition to managing the overall content of RetirementForTwo.com, you’ll find my contributions largely on the topics of investing, planning, and personal finance. Beyond that, I’ll likely muse about travel, consumption, and retirement lifestyle thrown in for good measure. And once I get comfortable, you’ll probably get a dose of my quirky sense of humor, too, so watch out!
I’ve spent the last two decades in the employee benefits industry helping businesses manage their benefits plans. And I’m incredibly passionate about traveling and food. I am constantly plotting our next adventure, big or small, near or far! Did I mention I like to eat?? Yep, quite fond of it.
I plan to share my knowledge on navigating the complicated world of health insurance, deductibles, and drug formularies. I’ll also share my expertise on Health Savings Accounts, Flexible Spending Accounts, and COBRA. Mixed in will be how to negotiate with hospitals and dentists when necessary, Medicare eligibility and more. To many those are boring but necessary topics that can add up to more savings (or more costs) through the years. I’ll try to cut through the smoke and mirrors the industry throws in front of you. And you can expect me to share my passion for travel and food related topics too!
